Written Voters' Pamphlet Statement Submitted by Candidate

"RICHARD MCIVER SETS HIMSELF APART…WITH A RECORD OF STEADY RESPONSIVENESS ON KEY ISSUES AFFECTING A BROAD-SECTION OF SEATTLE," - SEATTLE TIMES (9/18/05)

"RICHARD MCIVER IS OUR UNANIMOUS CHOICE… AFTER TWO TERMS, MCIVER RETAINS HIS PASSION FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, DECENT HOUSING AND AID FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES," - SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER (9/8/05)

THANK YOU for the privilege and honor of serving you. I offer a record of accomplishment in the public and private sectors that is thoughtful, honest and fair. I will continue to ask tough questions and take principled stances, while respecting diversity of thought and opinion. While I'm proud of my accomplishments, I've never been a headline seeker. I've gone about my work on the Council by being a consistent independent voice, accountable to you -- advocating for you.

As your City Councilmember, I will continue to be a:

Responsible steward of public funds

  • Voted against automatic property tax increase and, as Budget Chair, produced balanced budgets without raising general taxes.
  • Asked the tough questions about the Seattle Monorail Project when few elected officials were willing to do so.

Champion for disadvantaged communities

  • Architect of the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund, an unprecedented $50 million investment in preserving the small, minority and immigrant businesses in the path of light rail construction.
  • Created the Central Area Equity Fund, to provide the "gap financing" necessary to make housing development in the Central Area financially viable.
  • Broke the logjam for the $275 million New Holly development by crafting the one-to-one low income housing replacement plan.

Leader for Seattle's transportation needs

  • As a long time board member of Sound Transit, helped turn the troubled agency around through tough fiscal discipline. Now, Sound Transit is delivering on the promise of light rail.
  • Directed millions of dollars in bicycle, transit and pedestrian funds to Seattle as the Chairman of the region's transportation planning organization.

Again, THANK YOU for the privilege and honor to serve you. I ask for your support to continue to close the gap between the haves and have-nots, ensuring everyone in Seattle receives an opportunity to succeed.

"RICHARD MCIVER COMBINES DECADES OF INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY AND A CONTINUING PASSION FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE WITH A GENTLEMANLY MANNER TOO ABSENT IN CONTEMPORARY POLITICS. HIS ASCENSION TO CHAIR OF FINANCE AND BUDGET COMMITTEE LAST YEAR SIGNALS HIS COLLEAGUES' ONGOING RESPECT," -- SEATTLE WEEKLY (9/7-13/05)
