Written Voters' Pamphlet Statement Submitted by Candidate

Thank you for the privilege and honor of serving you. Fiscal responsibility, dedication and inclusiveness have guided my work on the council.

Together, we have made Seattle a better place to live today, and better prepared for tomorrow.

I offer a record of accomplishment in the public and private sectors that is thoughtful, honest and fair. I have been, and will continue to be, willing to ask tough questions and take principled stances. Even when I don't agree with others, I am open to, and respect, diversity of thought and opinion.

While I'm proud of my accomplishments, I've never been a headline seeker or driven by ego. I've gone about my work on the Council by being a consistent independent voice, accountable to you - advocating for you.

As your City Councilmember, I will continue to be a:

Responsible steward of public funds

  • Voted against automatic property tax increase and, as Budget Chair, produced balance budgets without raising general taxes.
  • Asked the tough questions about the Seattle Monorail Project when few elected officials were willing to do so.
  • As a long-time board member of Sound Transit, helped turn the troubled agency around through tough fiscal discipline.

Champion for disadvantaged communities

  • Architect of the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund, an unprecedented $50 million investment in preserving the small, minority and immigrant businesses in the path of light rail construction.
  • Created the Central Area Equity Fund, to provide the "gap financing" necessary to make housing development in the Central Area financially viable.
  • Broke the logjam for the $275 million New Holly development by crafting the one-to-one low-income housing replacement plan.

Leader for Seattle's transportation needs

  • Served as Seattle's representative on the Governors' Blue-Ribbon Task Force on Transportation, which set the stage for the state's $2 billion investment in the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
  • Directed millions of dollars in bicycle, transit and pedestrian funds to Seattle as the Chairman of the region's transportation planning organization.

Again, thank you for the privilege and honor to serve you over the past two terms. I ask for your support to continue to close the gap between the haves and have-nots, ensuring everyone in Seattle receives an opportunity to succeed.

Endorsed by:

Mayor Greg Nickels, Fmr. Mayors Norm Rice, Charles Royer, Wes Uhlman, King Co. Executive Ron Sims, Sen. Ken Jacobsen, Sen. Margarita Prentice, Rep. Ed Murray, Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos.
